Chaffin Luhana Foundation Helps Support Victims of Domestic Violence

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) states that on average, nearly 20 people per minute are abused by an intimate partner in the United States, adding up to more than 10 million women and men. One in three women and one in four men have been victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime, and one in four women and one in seven men have been victims of severe physical violence.

Domestic violence is defined as the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and or/other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It results in not only physical injuries, but has also been linked to higher rates of depression and suicidal behavior.

It’s present in all communities, but in Pennsylvania specifically, in 2014, a total of 2,498 victims/survivors were served by Pennsylvania domestic violence programs. In Philadelphia, 17.3 percent of students reported having been physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend in the past year, almost twice the national average.

The Crisis Center North in Pittsburgh is committed to assisting victims of domestic violence through a variety of resources and confidential services. Chaffin Luhana team member and Intake Specialist Michelle Spencer requested that the Chaffin Luhana Foundation contributes to the Crisis Center this year, to support their efforts.

“It is a domestic violence shelter that supplies so much for so many where a very little goes a long way,” she says. “This subject is very dear to my heart because of their services, and because so many are survivors.”

The center first opened its doors in 1978, and has been a program member of the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence since its incorporation. They provide 61 domestic violence programs including counseling and case management, legal and medial advocacy, and educational programming.

The Chaffin Luhana Foundation is pleased to donate $250 to the Crisis Center North during the holiday season. If you’d like to contribute as well, you can make a donation via the information listed below:
