According to the Food Aid Organization, one in seven people go hungry every day around the world, which translates to some 795 million people without enough food to lead a healthy, active life. Poor nutrition causes nearly half of deaths in children under the age of five and leaves one out of six children in developing countries underweight.
Mary’s Meals is a global movement that’s working to raise awareness of hunger and to help stamp it out through volunteerism. They offer school feeding programs to provide meals in schools, as well as emergency relief to vulnerable regions around the globe.
“I volunteered for Mary’s Meals when I was in college,” says Chaffin Luhana Accounts Manager Francesca Clements, “and it’s been close to my heart ever since. They provide emergency relief when needed, but most of their energy goes toward building schools in impoverished nations, encouraging local children to attend these schools and feeding them during the school day. Because the children are not suffering from hunger-related issues, they are able to make the most of their education and are offered a chance at a better life.”
The organization works in 17 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Caribbean. In Haiti, for instance, they provide daily meals at schools in Port-Au-Prince, Gonaives, and Hinches, and in India, they feed students in schools and non-formal education centers, like railway platforms.
“Our vision is that every child receives one daily meal in their place of education,”
the organization states on their website. “Working together, we believe that can be achieved in this world of plenty.”
