For a child, a birthday is a big deal, and though most children get to feel special on their birthdays, many don’t even get to celebrate. In Southwestern Pennsylvania alone, there are nearly 3,000 school-aged children identified as homeless.
These children usually miss out on things that other children may take for granted, with birthdays often overlooked because their families just aren’t in a position to celebrate.
Beverly’s Birthdays is trying to change that. It started back in 2011 when Megs Yunn, who would go on to found Beverly’s Birthdays, met a young girl who had never had her own birthday party or even her own slice of birthday cake. Her name was Beverly. Moved by her story, Megs started an organization that now provides birthday celebrations for homeless children in the Pittsburgh region.
“Unfortunately, homelessness in Pittsburgh is a continuing problem,” says Chaffin Luhana Case Manager Raelyn LeMunyon.
“Those that are homeless often go without things most people don’t even think twice about. Even more disheartening, homeless children also go without the same. In order to spread birthday cheer, the organization partners with several agencies throughout the region to make sure less fortunate children are able to celebrate their birthdays like any child should. Since their inception more than six years ago, Beverly’s Birthdays has been able to share over 30,000 birthday experiences with children from our region.”
LeMunyon adds that the agencies the organization partners with include but are not limited to 68 schools and over 65 social service agencies like homeless shelters, transitional housing programs, domestic violence shelters, group homes and residential treatment facilities.
At LeMunyon’s request, the Chaffin Luhana Foundation is happy to support the good work Beverly’s Birthdays is doing with a donation of $250. If you’d like to contribute as well, you can make a donation via the information listed below:
